SMTP, along with POP and IMAP is one of the most popular email protocols. Email protocols are sets of guidelines that allow various email applications and accounts to communicate information easily. It is also the only protocol specifically designed for sending emails. Most email applications use SMTP to “push” or send messages from a sender to a recipient, including Outlook, Apple Mail, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail.
