PWD full form is Public Works Department which is known as the Government department which handles the construction and maintenance projects of the Government. It is in charge of building structures, roads, trains, and bridges, among other things. The public works department was built to provide entertainment, health, safety, and employment to the general population. 

Infrastructure is critical in both the government and the public sectors. Construction projects facilitate transportation and other functions. It minimizes unemployment by giving individuals with varied talents chances. As a result, the Public Works Department is critical to the country’s growth. 

 Important dates in PWD 

PWD was separated into three primary sections: civic, military, and railway; this was not done until 1866. On April 21, 1854, the Bengal Presidency assumed authority and management of the PWD. Finally, in 1866, Lord Lawrence established a mechanism for the general public to invest in the public works department.  

A department obtained its funding through borrowing from the general public. Following the introduction of this method, many projects such as the Midnapore Canal, the Orissa Coast Canal, and others were built. The Public Works Department is in charge of construction projects and public unity projects such as buildings, bridges, and trains.

Central Public Works Department

PWD full form is Public Works Department is separated into each state and is controlled by the state government. The Central Public Works Department, on the other hand, reports to the Central Government. As a result, the CPWD assists with all central government civil works projects.

The Director General is in charge of the Central Public Works Department (DG). DG is the Government of India’s Principal Technical Adviser. Special DGs are in charge of regions, extra DGs are in charge of sub-regions, and chief engineers are in charge of zones in each state or capital.
